My Approach

My view is that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are shaped over time by a complicated set of interactions from three sources:

  • The temperament/personality with which we were born.

  • The environment and family systems of our childhoods.

  • The random external events that have shaped our lives.

What is the point of therapy?

My office is a safe, confidential place in which you can talk about the most personal, private issues that are troubling to you. With very few exceptions, everything we talk about will be absolutely private. This discrete therapy relationship is unique in the sense that it is limited to professional appointments and does not involve any contact outside of the office. In that way, our time together is focused on the things that are bothering you. My excellent and extensive professional training enables me to listen without any agenda of my own. My only intention is to help you find ways to be happier, more self confident, and more fulfilled in your life. I don’t think anyone can tell another person how to live his or her life. Therapy sessions can help you look at your life from a different perspective, in order to understand how to make different choices which will work better for you. I do believe that each of us wants to feel good, that we all know what it is we need in our lives to feel good, but that somehow over the years many barriers get in the way. I can help you identify these obstacles so that you can make better decisions for yourself and move on in your life.

    How does change happen?

No one really knows how or why talking about difficult things with a therapist produces life changes. But it does. I believe that the relationship between the therapist and the client is the key to success. If you feel comfortable enough to open up and be your authentic self with me than you will learn more about who you are and who you want to be in this life. You will feel free to make different behavioral choices because after working together for a while, you will actually experience life events differently. Attitudes will shift as you begin to see other possibilities, ways of making new meanings of familiar thoughts, feelings and events.

How many sessions does it take?

I am flexible about scheduling sessions. We decide together what will be most helpful. For some people, just a few sessions together resolves the issues that brought them in. Others may want a longer course of therapy which might involve looking into how one’s childhood experience has impacted one’s current situation and how to make peace with that history.

I can help you explore any or all of these in order to deal effectively with your issues.
